Disney villains do it best - They makes others bald, exchange bad parenting tips, toast to being horrible, jump through fire, and make potions under water.

This is brilliant, right?!

no ok can we just talk about this right here CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT THIS

this is supposed to be a kids’ show

and what we have here is the main antagonist (i don’t count ozai cos we barely see anything of him really) having a mental breakdown

she’s the villain

they could so easily have just written a cut-and-dry evil bad guy

but no

they’ve created an incredible character, full of flaws and a yearning for perfection that we can all identify with

even though she’s who the heroes are fighting azula is still easy to love

and right here, she is having a mental breakdown

her psychology is so complex - she has conflicting ideas about good and evil and where she stands in them.  she’s internalised her mother’s opinions of her to the point where she MANIFESTS THEM INTO HER MOTHER HERSELF.  this isn’t some ghost we’re seeing here, this is a schizophrenic event.  azula simultaneously thinks she’s wonderful and a monster and bryke don’t shy away from revealing that.

and when she eventually breaks down, when she is defeated by our heroes, even though she’s the villain it’s still hard not to feel heartbroken for her

and they tell me this is a kids’ show
